Welcome to the March praXis e-bulletin. In this issue we focus mainly on the counties of Staffordshire and Warwickshire. There is some exciting community-based work happening, as well as a number of opportunities to take part in arts and health debate, contribute to the development of training in the region and showcase your creative work.
praXis aims to increase capacity in the arts and health sectors to deliver and sustain high quality arts and health work. Our popularity has been proven by the number of website visitors in one year alone - over 10,000! This is a phenomenal achievement, and no doubt down to the support of our members spreading the word!

However we need you to help us further. We would be grateful if you would complete a short on-line questionnaire, which will assist us with future planning and direction. This will only take ten minutes and will give us invaluable feedback. We have had some responses, but we do need a lot more. Just click here to take the survey and many thanks for your support.
The praXis programme is being managed by Creative Health (Arts & Health) CIC, the new independent Arts and Health Community Interest Company for the West Midlands. You can read more about Creative Health here.
We do hope you enjoy reading this e-bulletin and as ever, welcome your comments.
Best wishes
The Directors

Everyone's Issue
Community Arts Workshop (CAW) has been commissioned by Warwickshire County Council to carry out a large scale Arts and Health programme with projects engaging people that use the County's Health and Social Care services.
The programme, ‘Everyone's Issue’, aims to support people to gain in physical and mental confidence, self esteem and skills through participation in arts activities.
The programme is currently running until the end of March. In May, CAW will publish a magazine about the projects and are inviting submissions from Warwickshire people. You can read more about the programme here or visit the CAW website for information on all their projects.
Call for Artists’ Showcase
PraXis, the Creative Communities Unit (CCU) at Staffordshire University and
Participatory Practitioners for Change are working together to host a conference in November 2010 which will explore participatory approaches and methods in action.
Staffordshire County Council will be sponsoring one of the conference themes, which will focus on arts and health. As part of this theme we are inviting artists to showcase their work. Read about the event and find out how to submit your work here.

Taxi!
A Walsall arts and health project is a featured case study on the National Social Marketing Centre (NSMC) website.
Taxi! was a one year pilot project developed by the Walsall Council Creative Development Team, using a social marketing approach, to encourage local taxi drivers to review their lifestyle and make positive changes. A short film was produced showing what kind of positive changes taxi drivers can make and the benefits these changes can bring to their health and working lives. Read more and access the full case study here.

PhD Opportunity: Is there a Business Case for Arts and Health?
praXis and Staffordshire University wish to appoint a PhD researcher to undertake a piece of work which addresses whether there is a business case for Arts and Health.
The research work will focus on assessing the effectiveness of high quality, large –scale, participatory arts work and the impact participatory arts has on health and wellbeing. The partners are particularly interested in finding out if participatory arts projects which involve large numbers of people can result in more cost-effective, repeatable models of practice. Read more here.

Arts and Health Training Needs
praXis is working with Warwickshire County Arts Service to develop a programme of training workshops for artists and health care workers living and working in Warwickshire interested in developing their knowledge and understanding of participatory Arts and Health work.
To help us plan the programme and understand needs in Warwickshire praXis will be producing an on-line questionnaire in the next few weeks. Please email us here if you would like to receive one, and contribute to this valuable piece of work. |

Your Projects
Thank you to everyone who has submitted information, news, opportunities and comments on the praXis Community Pages – our online community is growing! This month read about Dance Active, a four day training course delivered by PAN West Midlands on behalf of The Department of Health and DanceXchange in partnership with Youth Dance England. Health professionals are invited to join dance artists in a free half day of training followed by a networking session on Friday 26 March at Birmingham Hippodrome.
Also on the Community pages this month is our new Evaluation Toolkit and an insight into a praXis member’s website: Sex and Drugs and Rock and Health.

Why not profile your project on the praXis Community Pages? As long as it is participatory arts and health work which improves public health and wellbeing and supports community cohesion and regeneration, we can feature it. Events or projects which tackle major health priorities and issues, improve the quality of health care and health settings and have a positive impact on mental health will also be considered. Click here to register. We look forward to hearing from you! |
