Your Network

People have often asked us - who exactly does praXis represent? As you can see from the logos at the bottom of this e-bulletin, praXis is a group of people from a number of different organisations, working to develop an exciting arts and health learning network for the West Midlands region. However, like any good network praXis is nothing without its members. We are facilitating opportunities for learning and debate, but it is you as members who make these a success. By coming along to events, contributing to them and telling us what you think, we are inspired and supported to develop even more.

As ever, we very much hope that praXis is an invaluable vehicle for you and so we edit this e-bulletin as a forum for debate, discussion and support around learning and reflective practice in participatory arts and health. With this in mind, we intend to develop the e-bulletin and increase the dialogue and conversations within it (as well as continuing to give information about events and projects). We want to hear from you, so next issue we will give details about our new community page for the website and an important piece of evaluation for praXis members. We hope you will support these as much as you have supported the events so far. And why not let your colleagues and friends know about praXis? Send them this email and they can be part of the network too!

The next two Black Country Action Learning Workshops are now open for bookings. We have decided to develop an "Insider's Guide" series, based on the resounding success of the PCT event held in February at Wolverhampton. They are open to all those working or with a desire to work in the field, whether you are an artist or a commissioner of work. On 23rd June you can come along to "An Insider's Guide to Working Creatively for Positive Mental Health and Wellbeing" where Colleen Shekerie, Mental Health Community Development Worker Co-ordinator for Sandwell PCT, will present an overview of working in this diverse area, policies, targets and examples of projects. Delegates will then have an opportunity to reflect on their work and discuss the role of the artist in supporting this agenda. The workshop on 21st September is "An Insider's Guide to Delivering Arts in Hospitals".Both events will take place in West Bromwich. They are free, with lunch provided. Limited places are available and as ever, priority will be given to praXis members. To register your interest, contact Claire Carter:

Journal of Arts and Communities

Intellect Books www.intellectbooks.co.uk

Mailout is excited to announce publication of the first in a series of journals. The Journal of Arts and Communities seeks to provide a critical examination of the practices known as community or participatory arts, encompassing work which incorporates active creative collaboration between artists and people in a range of communities of place and interest.

The Journal seeks original researched articles, case studies, reports of projects in progress, particularly from practitioners and research students as well as book reviews, conference reviews and reports. Articles for the journals should be 5-6000 words long but can be longer in exceptional cases. Case studies and project reports from practitioners should be no more than 4000 words in length and do not have to be extensively referenced. Conference proceedings and other reports should be up to 1,000 words long and include both a description and a critical analysis. The journal will encourage the publication of articles which not only describe practical research but which delineate the analysis which formed part of the research.

For more information on the journal and to submit work proposals for the further two issues go to: http://www.intellectbooks.co.uk/journals.php?issn=17571936

A unique event is taking place on Monday 18th May, from 10.30am - 12.30pm in The Activity Space, Staffordshire University.   It will be open to any organisation in the West Midlands which is interested in supporting the training of artists, arts development workers and health or community workers in participatory arts and health work. You will have the opportunity to meet up to 15 artists who have recently completed their training on the Artist Professional Development programme. You will get the chance to hear about their work and their experience, see some examples and discuss whether they would be suitable for any future projects. Commissioners will also be able to exchange contact information and publicise their service, programme or projects directly to artists. Following this, there will also be the opportunity to discuss good practice in commissioning and meet other organisations interested in the professional development of artists in arts and health.

This unique event is free and lunch will also be provided. Hurry to register your interest - there were only 5 places left at the time of writing! Contact Karen Bell as soon as possible:
karen@creativityteam.co.uk Priority will be given to those who are praXis members (visit www.praxisartsandhealth.org.uk and click the "Join Us" page).
